Lace for Kids' Clothing — How to Choose Safe, Soft Trims for Frocks, Baby Garments, and Children's Wear

Kids' clothing is one of the fastest-growing segments in Indian garment retail, and lace trims are a staple of children's frocks, party dresses, lehenga-cholis for girls, and festive kurta sets. But kids' garment lace has requirements that adult garment lace does not — primarily around skin safety, softness, and wash durability.

Why Kids' Lace Needs Special Consideration

Children's skin is thinner and more sensitive than adult skin. Scratchy lace edges, stiff jari threads, or loose sequins that a child might pull off and put in their mouth are real risks. A boutique that sells a frock with sharp or irritating lace trim will get a return — and potentially a one-star review that affects future sales.

At Paras Lace in Surat, we recommend three checks for every lace intended for kids' garments: (1) run the lace edge against the inside of your wrist — if it feels scratchy to you, it will feel scratchy to a child; (2) pull a sequin or bead with moderate force — if it comes off, reject the design; (3) wash a test swatch in warm water twice — if the lace shrinks, stiffens, or bleeds colour, it is not suitable for kids' wear.

Best Lace Types for Children's Garments

Cotton Lace. The safest and softest option. Cotton lace is breathable, hypoallergenic, and softens further with washing. Ideal for baby frocks, infant rompers with lace trim, and casual kids' dresses. Available in 0.5-inch to 3-inch widths. ₹15-50 per metre wholesale from Surat.

Crochet Lace (Soft Finish). Crochet lace with a soft finish — not the stiff, starched crochet used for adult saree borders — works well on party frocks and lehenga-cholis for girls aged 3-12. The open-weave structure is lightweight and does not pull on the garment fabric. ₹25-70 per metre.

Narrow Polyester Lace (1-2 inch). Polyester lace for kids should be narrow (under 2 inches) and soft-handled. Use on denim jackets, girls' kurtis, and casual dresses. Avoid wide, stiff polyester lace on kids' garments — it does not drape well on small silhouettes. ₹12-35 per metre.

Lace to Avoid for Kids' Wear. Mirror-work (shisha) lace, heavy beadwork lace, and metallic jari lace with exposed wire edges are not recommended for children under 10. The risk of a mirror piece detaching, a bead being swallowed, or a wire edge scratching skin outweighs the visual appeal.

Wholesale Sourcing Tips for Kids' Wear Brands

Ask for "baby-safe finish" when ordering. Surat lace manufacturers including Paras Lace can apply an extra softening wash and edge-finishing pass on lace orders specifically intended for children's clothing. This adds ₹3-5 per metre but significantly reduces returns and complaints.

Order narrower widths. Kids' garments are smaller than adult garments. A 3-inch lace border that looks proportionate on a saree overwhelms a child's frock. Stick to 0.5-inch to 2-inch lace for most kids' wear applications.

Stock pastel and bright colours separately from adult lace inventory. Pastel pink, baby blue, mint green, and butter yellow outsell metallic gold and silver 3:1 in the kids' segment. Keep a dedicated kids' colour palette in your inventory.

Paras Lace has supplied soft-finish cotton lace, crochet lace, and narrow polyester lace for children's garment manufacturers and boutique brands from our Surat, Gujarat unit since 1990. All kids' lace orders receive a soft-finish pass at no extra cost. Call +91 87502 69626 for wholesale rates and kids' lace sample swatches.
